“Changing the way I thought changed my life,” says Jon Acuff, New York Times bestselling author and widely acclaimed keynote speaker.

Acuff’s most recent book Soundtracks: The Surprising Solution to Overthinking combats negative thoughts and finds quick and effective ways to channel their intrusive power for good.

On this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast, Acuff joins RE/MAX Holdings CEO Adam Contos to inform listeners on how they can achieve goals big and small without the presence of intrusive thoughts.

Simply put, the Nashville native defines overthinking as when your thoughts get in the way of what you want. The first step to overcoming overthinking, according to Acuff, is to keep the flow of thoughts – but harness them with good intention, instead of letting them be fueled by stress and anxiety.

“What if you could turn overthinking from a problem into a superpower?” he asks.

To do so, Acuff suggests labeling reoccurring negative thoughts as soundtracks, retiring them and replacing them with new repeatable mantras.

“Most people don’t understand they get to choose their thoughts,” he says, explaining that most people are never taught on the subject of negative overthinking.

In order to identify a broken soundtrack, Acuff suggests writing down a desired goal and then seeing what anxious thoughts first come to mind. Which thoughts prevent that goal from being accomplished?

He ensures that progress is not necessarily a quick process, but working on one’s mindset is a long-term challenge – not a simple solution.

“Don’t give the problem a year and the solution a week,” he advises.

Tune in to this week’s podcast episode to learn more tips and tricks for channeling positive thoughts – and accomplishing goals – from Acuff.
