Finish this sentence:

“Home is where the (blank) is.”

Whether the answer is “mom,” “dog,” or even “fiddle leaf fig,” the idea of “home” is unique to everyone – and no two journeys to homeownership are the same.

In honor of National Homeownership Month this June, RE/MAX asked its Instagram followers to share their real estate stories. Although the process can be stressful at times – especially in this competitive market – followers shared their view from the other side, including the favorite part of their home and advice for those currently on the house hunt.

Here are a few things the responses had in common:

Yep, everyone wants an outdoor space – or just more space in general

A recurring theme was homebuyers wanted a yard or even just a nice patio where they could sip rosé. Many listed their garden or other outdoor features as their favorite part of their home. Family was another common reason for buying a home, with some followers mentioning they needed space for a new little one.

They raved about the value of using an agent

Only one respondent said they didn’t work with a real estate agent. The rest shared that their agent provided valuable insight on the market, helped them at every step from inspection to close, and even served as a “therapist” during the most stressful parts of the transaction. Instagram responses confirm it: It’s important to have the right agent every step of the way.

Many see homeownership as an important part of their financial future

“Equity” and “financial security” both appeared as recurring themes, showing that even as the real estate market remains competitive, many people still find value in becoming homeowners.
