Angelica Olmsted used to build and promote technology that supports real estate agents. Now she’s an agent herself, optimizing that same technology to build her business. In just one year of being a RE/MAX real estate agent, she’s learned that taking baby steps while working toward an ultimate goal builds lasting client relationships and leads to success.
On this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast, Olmsted joins RE/MAX CEO Adam Contos to share advice for other agents new to the business.
Until last year, Olmsted was developing tech tools for booj, the technology company purchased by RE/MAX. Despite working closely with the real estate industry for so long, Olmsted conquered challenges she hadn’t anticipated when she began her new career as an agent.
Right off the bat, Olmsted set incremental goals for herself and mapped out the baby steps essential to growth.
She knew how important relationships were to agents and that she needed to nurture her existing sphere in order to grow business. So that’s where she started.
“Building my CRM database was something I spent three full weeks [and] eight hours a day on… I knew that would help me in the long run and it has,” she explains.
Olmsted speaks to the delicate balance an agent must strike when communicating with clients, maintaining genuine connection while still promoting their business. She believes it’s more important to focus on authentic communications than sales.
“[Communications are] unique for each person, because if you try to put a formula together, it won’t be personal anymore,” Olmsted says.
One of her ways she nurtures her sphere, she shares, is to write hand-written birthday cards for each contact and send along a lottery ticket – a fun gesture that’s received grateful feedback. When advising other agents on getting started building their own businesses, she recommends finding unique ways to check in with your entire sphere.
“A small task is better than no task,” she says.
Tune into this week’s podcast episode to hear more of Olmsted’s advice for agents, as well as tips for buyers and sellers seeking a perfect-match real estate agent.
