According to organizational psychologist and executive coach Dr. Tasha Eurich, most people are under the impression that they are self-aware. But in reality, only 10-15% of people meet the criteria of true self-awareness.

With years of research under her belt and now as a New York Times bestselling author, Dr. Eurich is an expert in all things self-awareness. She has worked directly with more than 20,000 leaders across various industries, including employees of the NBA, Google and the White House Leadership Team.

On this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast, Dr. Eurich joins RE/MAX CEO Adam Contos to unpack the two main components of self-awareness – and provide practical ways to implement them in order to grow, communicate and improve work performance.

Dr. Eurich explains that self-awareness is the will and skill to see ourselves clearly.

In order to obtain complete self-awareness, she explains that there are two main components one must fully grasp:

1. Internal self-awareness: knowing who you are, what you stand for and what you hope to experience in life

2. External self-awareness: understanding how other people interpret you

“There are a lot of internal hard-wired barriers to seeing ourselves clearly. And, we live in a society that is almost tempting us to become more self-absorbed and less self-aware,” Dr. Eurich says.

She shares two practical exercises to apply these learnings.

“The Daily Check-In” is a routine Dr. Eurich recommends people do three to five times per week to assess their performance. It involves analyzing what went well, what went wrong and what can be improved each day.

She also recommends reconsidering who you get feedback from. Do those who give you feedback genuinely care about seeing you succeed? And are they also willing to be confrontational? Dr. Eurich describes those who meet these criteria as “loving critics.”

“It’s not about quantity – if you can get two or three of these loving critics that are poised to give that regular feedback, that’s a way to get completely game-changing improvement in the level of honesty you’re getting,” she says.

Tune into this week’s podcast episode to learn more about how to become more self-aware and thrive in your personal and professional life.
