For Ruben Gonzalez, flying down an icy track at 75 miles per hour is considered slow.

The Olympic luger is an active competitor hoping to compete in the next winter Olympics. But when he’s not training, Gonzalez is traveling around the world helping others create and sustain business growth through speaking seminars.

On this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast, Gonzalez joins RE/MAX Holdings CEO Adam Contos to share how the determination and mindset it takes to be an Olympic athlete is a precise analogy for real estate agents conducting business.

Years ago, as he was heading into the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, a coach taught Gonzalez how to overcome fear.

“He said, ‘Stop focusing on the walls or going faster… focus on what you need to do on every section of every curve to ensure you’ll have the best time, and the fear will disappear. Shift your focus,'” Gonzalez recalls.

When you get to be at the expert level of your craft, Gonzalez says, the most important aspect of success is mentality – not performance. He adds that focusing on negativity doesn’t help a professional luger be any better, and the same applies to real estate agents building their business among competitors in a fast-paced market.

“Get away from naysayers,” Gonzalez advises. “Your new focus needs to be, ‘What do I need to do in the next 15 minutes to move my business forward?'”

According to Gonzalez, having trust in yourself is half the battle. This mantra has guided him through his professional career, especially now at 59 years old as he will potentially be the oldest Olympic competitor at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Gonzalez would also be the first person in history to compete in five Olympic games across five different decades.

Tune in to this week’s podcast episode to hear how Gonzalez got into the sport of luging, and how the lessons he’s learned along the way have guided his advice to others through his public speaking ventures.
