Westminster, Massachusetts is a small town an hour west of Boston, 20 minutes from the New Hampshire border, and miles away from ordinary. As Kurt Thompson knows well, business in small towns takes big ambition. It also takes the use of innovative tools and systems, which need to be both agent- and client-centric – especially in a relationship-building profession like real estate.

In December 2022, Thompson, a former team leader with Keller Williams, opened RE/MAX Liberty, a boutique-style brokerage tailored to the needs of modern and forward-thinking REALTORS® focused on providing best-in-class service to their customers.

By embracing the time-saving technology solutions offered through RE/MAX, Thompson has been able to leverage his 25+ year track record of success in the industry and position the professionals affiliated with RE/MAX Liberty to be a real estate force to be reckoned with.

“I take pride in being able to provide a really great business experience to agents who have not previously had this level of administrative assistance, amazing foundation of cutting-edge technologies and business systems, and the strength of a fully engaged leadership team supporting their businesses,” Thompson says. “North Central Massachusetts is a wonderful place to work and live, and at RE/MAX Liberty we’re ready to lead the real estate industry for years to come.”

Thompson, originally an agent with RE/MAX from 2012 to 2014, was familiar with the systems offered by RE/MAX, the philosophy of agent-centric support, and the strength and power of being affiliated with such a dominant brand. In 2022, when it was time to open a brokerage of his own and to take his leadership to the next level, he knew it was the right time to return to RE/MAX.

“RE/MAX is a customizable business model that helps agents reach their goals,” he says. “Plus, we have been so amazed with the talent RE/MAX headquarters has in their trainers and their support staff, especially when experiencing Broker 101 [a four-day learning opportunity for new franchisees]. I didn’t realize that onboarding to a franchise business system could be this easy – they really thought everything through.”

Embarking on a journey from team leader to Broker/Owner, Thompson shares a glimpse into growing his business and helping real estate agents thrive with the RE/MAX brand.

Leveraging innovative resources

Global brand recognition is an asset Thompson found hard to beat.

“Whenever you’re considering building a business, you have to ask the question, ‘Do I want to spend a number of years developing a brand? Or, do I embrace a brand that already has excellent systems in place and a great reputation?’ That’s what really drove the decision to join RE/MAX – it was the clear choice,” Thompson shares.

He also cites MAX/TechSM powered by kvCORE – the all-new technology offering implemented by RE/MAX and being introduced to affiliates in the U.S. and Canada at no added cost – as a major factor when choosing where to grow his business, especially in today’s market conditions. The platform helps simplify digital business for agents, assisting with lead generation, contact management, and more.

“As the market continues to normalize, it’s critical for agents to become brilliant at the basics and to have that cutting-edge tech overlay, which is one of the reasons we’re so excited about MAX/Tech powered by kvCORE,” Thompson says. “It’s going to give our agents a competitive advantage when they’re up against other agents in the marketplace.”

RE/MAX technology tools and platforms are designed to support individual agents and teams alike, a critical factor for Thompson and his team-oriented mindset. The Home Just For You team, which he led at his past brand, now operates from his RE/MAX brokerage.

The team structure, according to Thompson, can benefit professionals at any level of business. He points out that, to help ensure retention, joining a team can position newer agents for success with support, as well as time-tested systems and processes. It can also benefit seasoned agents looking to better prioritize and delegate, to ultimately make business more efficient and achieve that elusive work-life balance.

“We can help ensure that agents are able to be successful right off the bat rather than if they had to do it alone without the support of a team or without the backing of a powerful franchise like RE/MAX,” Thompson explains. “And for the agent that has been in the business for a long period of time, it’s not uncommon to see work/life balance issues. The solution can be as simple as leveraging administrative support and/or creating a team approach to streamline their business.”

Knowing these factors, Thompson is ensuring his brokerage helps set up teams for sustainability and success.

“With my new role as Broker/Owner and with a colleague now leading the Homes Just For You team, I am equipped to assist any agent or any team in our market who is looking to take their business to the next level.”

Connecting with community

Based in a small town and serving many surrounding communities, Thompson knows the value of leadership within his own company and beyond.

In fact, Thompson, who says a strong business also supports philanthropy and volunteer leadership, serves on the extended leadership team for the National Association of REALTORS (NAR), and has previously led the North Central Massachusetts Association of REALTORS (NCMAR) and the Massachusetts Association of REALTORS (MAR) as president.

“It’s been a wonderful opportunity to be of service to all of our REALTOR members across the country on the ground and at a higher level,” he says. “I believe that the best REALTORS are able to run a successful business, provide exceptional service to their clients, and be volunteer leaders in their communities and our industry. We are here at RE/MAX Liberty to help support them to build both amazingly successful businesses and give back to their communities while maintaining balance and quality of life.”

Thompson shares that RE/MAX Liberty will host a grand opening party in the near future. The event will bring together members of the community to meet new faces and connect with old friends.

“This has been a really wonderful opportunity for me to return home to my RE/MAX roots,” he says.
