A productive mindset is the catalyst for opportunity, growth and greatness. Just ask RE/MAX Holdings CEO Erik Carlson.
On a recent episode of the Real Estate Insiders Unfiltered Podcast, Carlson related lessons from his nearly three decades at DISH Network – where he rose through the ranks to eventually become President and CEO – and his first year as RE/MAX Holdings CEO.
Tune into the episode below:
Carlson explained how his background in sales helps him understand consumer tendencies and determine how companies and products can provide the best possible customer experience. When you focus on customers and their needs, good things tend to happen, he said.
Carlson’s career at DISH Network, a Fortune 200 company, began as an account executive selling C-band satellite dishes. Over the next 28 years, his career progressed to the role of President and CEO, which he held for six years. Carlson joined RE/MAX Holdings as CEO in November 2023, ready for change and excited to tackle new challenges in a different industry. He now oversees the strategic growth and health of the RE/MAX, Motto Mortgage and wemlo brands.
In both phases of his career, his entrepreneurial mindset has served him well.
“I love challenges. I love being curious. And I love trying to innovate,” Carlson said.
“I have the desire to try to get better every day. If you have that mindset, and if you can set long-term goals and figure out what it takes inch-by-inch and yard-by-yard, then I think you can find milestones to be successful.”
He reflects on his first year with RE/MAX Holdings – a year which saw plenty of noise amid evolving housing market conditions and industry changes.
“Coming into a company like this with such a great brand, [while] the industry [was experiencing] a little bit of chaos, I just subscribed to the idea that through chaos comes opportunity. I’m hoping I can make a difference here,” Carlson said.
“Our vision is that we want to be the best in real estate – that’s our North Star and what we’re focused on. We have a lot of great folks who are helping support that day in and day out. We [see many] opportunities, especially in times of change.”
People, he believes, can make all the difference in finding success.
“It always starts with people,” he said. “If you have a strong culture with the right vision, team and motivation, you can accomplish almost anything.”
