The Fair Housing Act of 1968 exists to prevent conscious and subconscious discrimination in all industries related to housing. As the Director of Fair Housing Policy at the National Association of Realtors (NAR), Bryan Greene works to ensure the real estate industry is supported to enhance housing equality for all.
On this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast, Greene joins RE/MAX CEO Adam Contos to explore the history of biased housing in the U.S., and share how NAR is working to create equal opportunity in real estate, as well as adjacent industries like mortgage, insurance, advertising and appraisals.
Prior to his role with NAR, Greene spent 29 years working for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). He now manages NAR’s new 45-member fair housing policy committee dedicated to the nationwide enforcement of fair housing practices, including the prohibition of discrimination against someone due to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability or familial status.
The NAR Code of Ethics takes it a step further, banning discrimination against others on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity – aspects not currently covered under federal law.
“Judge peo ple based on their financial qualifications and judge all peo ple on the same financial qualifications. Do not judge peo ple based on their background or vary from the true standards, the business standards, you have for housing,” Greene says.
Tune into the 113th episode of Start With a Win to learn how Greene has seen COVID-19 affect fair housing and how the pandemic is showing that health and housing are closely related.
