Here’s the truth: Everyone has failed at one point or another. But for anyone who’s faced adversity and, ultimately, failure, what did they do to eventually find success?

On this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast, RE/MAX Holdings CEO Adam Contos and Producer Mark discuss fear, failure, challenge and success as they dive into concepts from Adam’s upcoming book, “Start With a Win: Tools and Lessons to Create Personal and Business Success.” All proceeds from the sale of Adam’s book will benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

‘The reality is, you need to experience all of life. You need to experience successes [and] you need to experience failures,” Adam says frankly.

Recentering its meaning away from negativity, Adam defines a failure as a learning opportunity.

“A challenge isn’t a burden on your shoulders – a challenge is an opportunity for you to either create a success or create a learning moment,” he says.

He recalls arriving at his first day of boot camp for the U.S. Marine Corps years ago, feeling intimidated and facing all new challenges. He harnessed these feelings to perform better and ultimately came away with the tools necessary to reroute action in the face of fear.

Fear and overwhelm, according to Adam, are the primary reasons why people stay in their comfort zones and avoid taking risks. For personal and professional growth, or understanding consumer mindset, this is an issue.

“Fear is the No. 1 reason why somebody doesn’t even try something [new],” says Adam. “[It’s] the biggest situation [a] consumer goes through that prevents [a] sale from occurring. That’s why you have cart abandonment online, that’s why you have [high] bounce rates on a website, that’s why you have these different transactions crumbling.”

Adam believes fear of the unknown during childhood doesn’t dissipate over time. Rather, it reshapes itself in adulthood to hold people back and avoid the frustration and embarrassment associated with failure.
