Snow days are typically spent cozied up on the couch, sipping a warm beverage or reluctantly shoveling snow. Feel like cabin fever is setting in from being stuck at home? Complete these tasks for a productive day around the house.

1. Clean out closets

Don’t just rummage through clothing items – try them on! Test out pieces you haven’t worn in ages or things you’ve been considering getting rid of. You may be wearing certain items simply because they land on top of piles after doing laundry. Realistically evaluate what you own; you may find some forgotten treasures.

2. Organize small spaces

A clean house is so much more than the visible surfaces. Nooks and crannies are notorious for hiding mess – everyone has that catch-all junk drawer, right? Your bedroom can appear tidy, but the dresser drawers may conceal crumpled heaps of clothes, or necklaces tangled together in a jewelry box. Focus on organizing hyperlocal zones in the house so a room that appears neat on the outside is neat on the inside, too.

3. Get cooking

You finally have time to devote to that complicated recipe you flagged months ago. Whatever your tastes may be, take this opportunity to cook something out of the ordinary and use up ingredients that have been lurking on cupboard shelves (if they haven’t expired). Try to incorporate produce that’s on its way out the door, too. Canned food can get lost in the back of the pantry, so consider making soup!

4. Toss old papers and magazines

When you’re lounging under a blanket, flip through magazines that have accumulated or stacks of paper piling up around the house. Read each piece and organize into two boxes: “keep” and “toss.” Chances are, the majority of pesky paper sitting around can be recycled – whether that’s outdated newspapers, expired coupons, old receipts, or mail that’s been tended to. The best news? You can do this task from the comfort of the couch.
