Winn Claybaugh is the co-founder and dean of Paul Mitchell Schools, the renowned global network of hairdressing institutions. But believe it or not, Claybaugh has never given a haircut himself.
Instead, he is an entrepreneur and a leader of whatever he sets his mind to.
On this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast, Claybaugh joins RE/MAX CEO Adam Contos to share his insight on what it takes to be an influential leader and why it’s important to give back to others.
“Leadership is not about a title. Leadership is an attitude,” Claybaugh says.
He defines leadership as the ability to have an influence over others, explaining that everyone possesses the capability to be a leader regardless of role or position. It’s about having passion and enthusiasm and making a difference in people’s lives, he says.
That entrepreneurial spirit extends to giving back and making a difference through philanthropy as well. Claybaugh believes that every organization should prioritize making a difference in their communities.
“If all you’re concerned with is putting money into your own pocket, you’re going to lose customers, you’re going to lose employees [and] you’re going to lose that loyalty,” he says. “You have to have that commitment [and] dedication locally [and globally] of being a good neighbor, being a good citizen and giving back to your local communities.”
Paul Mitchell Schools has raised over $20 million for charitable organizations, including Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, which RE/MAX has proudly partnered with for over 29 years.
“I can’t imagine what that feels like for a parent when [they hear] that there is a medical challenge [with their child]. So, if me or my company, my influence or my organization can be a small part in donating and supporting [CMN Hospitals] that supports 10 million children a year, I am thrilled to do that,” Claybaugh says.
Tune into this week’s podcast episode to hear Claybaugh’s best advice for self-development, which he believes is the heart of all great leadership.
