In mid-April, RE/MAX CEO Adam Contos participated in a virtual panel of real estate executives to discuss emerging trends, best practices and opportunities for growth, as well as what the industry will look like after COVID-19. His message was clear: How agents care for their communities, in and outside real estate, directly impacts the resiliency of their business once the crisis is in the past.

The panel, originally scheduled for the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) 2020 National Convention and Housing Policy Summit, was moderated by REAL Trends President Steve Murray and featured co-panelists Allan Dalton, Real Living Real Estate CEO and Berkshire Hathaway SVP of Research and Development, and Michael Miedler, Century 21 President & CEO. RE/MAX Senior Vice President Mike Reagan provided the opening remarks.

Contos shared these insights to help brokers and agents fortify their businesses during these challenging times.

1. If your community forgets about you, you’re out of business.

“The saying, ‘People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,’ resonates even more now,” Contos said. Deploying gratitude and emanating kindness to those in and outside your sphere delivers immediate value right for the times. These are behaviors people will remember long after COVID-19.

2. Be open to change. Those who reposition themselves will reemerge ahead of the competition.

“It’s time to get a little uncomfortable,” Contos said. The housing market may play a significant role in the recovery of the economy. Leaders who embrace the latest real estate technology, those that can lead consumers through the buying or selling process in a largely virtual way, will elevate the consumer experience and cement their position as a trusted advisor in the largest financial decision many people will ever make.

3. Preparedness is key.

The unfortunate reality is that global health issues could come up again in our lifetime. “I’m proud of how RE/MAX – and the industry at large – has reacted so quickly. It’s clear that being nimble and constantly delivering value are the drivers of success in crisis,” Contos said. Moving forward, accounting for these types of crises in business plans will be crucial for brokerages and entrepreneurs.

“Times like these remind us that we have to do the best we can to take care of each other, because we are going to go through challenges again in the future,” Contos said. “It’s important to reflect on this in years to come and know we got through this together, through the help of transparency in our space, leadership and communities. I have a lot of gratitude and appreciation for [all real estate professionals].”

RE/MAX is proud to support NAHREP through the sponsorship of publications, studies, events and advocacy. In June 2019, NAHREP released its annual Top 250 Agents Report and RE/MAX once again, for the fourth consecutive year, led all brands with the most agent rankings. In 2020, Luis Padilla of RE/MAX Oceanside Realty was installed as 2020 President-Elect of NAHREP. He will be the second RE/MAX Associate to serve as President of NAHREP when he is installed in 2021.
