“Stress is the emotion of fear… it’s worrying about the unknown future. How do you overcome fear? Action!” says RE/MAX CEO Adam Contos.

On this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast, Adam sits down for a solo episode to explore the multifaceted subject of stress and how it can actually be a catalyst for action – and improvement in your life.

According to Adam, stress is your body’s response to anything that requires attention or action. And the best way to combat stress is to face stressors head-on with a plan in place.

“Stop worrying and start doing,” he puts simply.

Grappling with stress can lead people to develop effective problem-solving mechanisms. Adam shares a helpful acronym for combatting stress: “SPA,” which stands for stress, planning and action.

Essentially, when plagued with stress, the quickest and most effective way to get through it is to come up with a plan and put it into action. This avoids the process of dwelling in the fear of the unknown and instead creates headway toward a solution.

“You’re not going to get rid of your problems, but you can turn them into opportunities,” Adam says.

What provides you a moment of reprieve from stressors? Is it swaying to classical music? A workout? Find that source of temporary relief and enact it when you encounter stressful issues – and then get going on a solution.
