RE/MAX CEO Adam Contos defines emotional intelligence as the ability to use empathy in decision making, and emotional maturity as the ability to manage choices, both easy and difficult.
On this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast, Adam explores emotional intelligence and emotional maturity in greater depth – and explains why they’re essential for effective leadership.
“When you lose emotional control, nothing ends up well,” Adam says. “[So] how do we master our emotions?”
This is where the hybrid of emotional intelligence and emotional maturity comes into play.
For starters, Adam explains, people function based on two emotions: fear and love. Fear is the default emotion used by humans for self-preservation, whereas love is a function based on emotion. People can gain better emotional control and, in turn, become better leaders when they distance themselves from their ego, which is influenced by fear and love.
“Your job as a leader is to build [other] leaders. [It’s] to teach other people to recognize emotional intelligence and emotional maturity – and function properly without an ego,” he says.
Grasping and controlling one’s own human emotions is complex. Tune in to this week’s podcast episode for more guidance from Adam on mastering emotions and utilizing empathy to be a valuable leader who makes a positive impact on others.
