The 2021 Broker Owner Conference (BOC) kicked off on Monday, August 9, with a message of making an impact through leadership, thanks to the incomparable J.R. Martinez. The actor, army veteran, burn survivor and winner of the Mirrorball Trophy on season 13 of “Dancing with the Stars” addressed the RE/MAX network, thanking them for hosting him 17 years prior and reminding them that everyone has an opportunity to be a leader and make a difference.

Martinez was in good company at the BOC, where Gilbert Tuhabonye, a retired professional runner and genocide survivor, closed the annual convention for RE/MAX franchisees and more than 20 industry leaders spoke to the in-person and live-streaming BOC attendees.

Here are some of the top takeaways:

“A lot of people get it mixed up when they think of leadership. They think of people over there that have the title, people over there that have the responsibility, people over there that have the parking spot – they’re the leaders. We very often forget that we, on a daily basis, have the opportunity to be leaders and to influence and impact people in a powerful way. Every single one of us. Doesn’t matter what you do. Doesn’t matter what your role is. Every single one of us has that opportunity.”

“I look at the RE/MAX logo, no matter where I am in the world because I see it often, and I get a good feeling because I remember what you did for me 17 years ago. And I know you’re going to continue to do that for a lot of other people.”

“The only thing that is really sure about tomorrow is that it’s not going to look like today. We [live] in a world right now where there’s more competition than ever … But competition, when you understand it, does one of two things. Competition either makes you better or competition eliminates you.”

Jared James, top real estate coach explaining that those who step up to challenge will have a better business because of it, but those who focus on direct competition will not

“Go all in on RE/MAX. They’re the original disruptor.”

“I have witnessed great tragedy. I have felt heartbreak and disappointment. But look at me, my friends, I am full of joy. Joy is about taking this incredible experience we call life. Life is a journey like running, changing pace. Life’s pace can be stressful or relaxed. Life’s pace can be painful or victorious. Life’s pace can be hard or easy. My question to all of you this afternoon: Are you running your life with joy? Are you getting up every morning, fired up, ready to do your work with joy?”

Gilbert Tuhabonye, who survived a genocide attack in his home country, on finding joy in every situation

“Set incremental goals…It’s about doing what you love, [feeling good] about yourself and [focusing] on yourself… Not focusing on what others are doing.”
