“What is the killer of humility?” RE/MAX Holdings CEO Adam Contos asks frankly.

His answer? It’s a person’s ego.

On this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast, Adam and Producer Mark continue the journey through Adam’s upcoming book, “Start With a Win: Tools and Lessons to Create Personal and Business Success,” and focus on how business leaders can repurpose the power of ego to inspire others. All proceeds from the sale of Adam’s book will benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

According to Adam, a person’s ego is what drives them to be self-centered and, in terms of leadership, can lead them to take credit for a group’s successes or blame failures on others.

True leaders, he says, must leave their egos behind – or learn how to repurpose them altogether.

“We all have egos, but you have to control your ego. You have to use it for the right purposes, [like] confidence,” Adam says.

“[An ego] is an insecurity, an emotional response triggered to protect your own vulnerabilities,” he adds.

Adam reassures listeners that it’s OK for leaders to be unable to complete every task themselves. Instead, their job is to find the right people to complete certain tasks and provide them with the proper guidance along the way.

In turn, leaders must learn to be transparent and vulnerable with themselves – and maintain emotional control, a topic Adam frequently speaks to.

“Be strong enough to listen, wise enough to ask and kind enough to help,” he says.

Tune in to this week’s podcast episode to learn why leaders should seek out a mentor, a coach and a mastermind – and how each of those disciplines offer unique forms of guidance.
