The future is bright for RE/MAX, and its leadership is taking the brand to an even higher level, according to RE/MAX Holdings Chairman and Co-Founder Dave Liniger.
Liniger joined RE/MAX Holdings CEO Adam Contos on stage at the 2021 Broker Owner Conference (BOC) to share insights into all aspects of the business during a conversation led by RE/MAX, LLC President Nick Bailey.
The trio discussed the nature of the industry, the dynamics of the current market and the principles of finding entrepreneurial success.
Focus on the things that create excellence
Contos said everyone starts their day with the same issues as the day before, but if they seek out their challenges and see them as opportunities, big things will happen. Their choices and resulting actions – such as doing the necessary work rather than avoiding it – make all the difference. “It’s about focusing on the things that create excellence,” he said.
Practice your craft
Focus, Liniger agreed, is an important word. Pointing to Olympians, he credited the athletes for having set a goal and then establishing a step-by-step program for winning. That ability to never lose focus is the key, he says, because no matter the goal, everyone needs to practice their craft – day after day, month after month. In doing so professionally, there’s one element more important than all others. “It’s not your talent. It’s not your past experience. It’s the ability to handle the rejection of being told ‘no,’ nine out of 10 times, in order to get to a yes. That’s it. Period,” Linger said.
Face your biggest competitor: You
Contos says the biggest competitor anyone faces is themself. For example, if a leader isn’t recognizing their people – offering praise and cheering them on – their people won’t feel fulfilled. And the work will suffer. “Studies show that life is about fulfillment,” he said. For that reason, Contos advised leaders to get out of their own way and stop being distracted. Instead, he said, they should determine what their people need and take action to deliver it – instead of assuming it’s already happening.
