“Stay hungry, stay humble.”
That’s RE/MAX Holdings CEO Adam Contos’ favorite saying – and what he believes is the perfect mantra for great leaders everywhere.
“We have to always look for opportunities to get better – and then we have to go pursue those in order to be better,” Contos says.
On this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast, Adam and Producer Mark continue the conversation on topics highlighted in Adam’s upcoming book, “Start With a Win: Tools and Lessons to Create Personal and Business Success.” All proceeds from the sale of Adam’s book will benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
Effective leadership is about winning through the culmination of small wins, not just one big win. After all, success for most does not happen overnight. Adam asks listeners: How can you try and improve yourself, your performance and your business every single day?
“You have to have this habit of repeating the basics every day. [It’s] consistency,” he explains.
A key aspect to successful leadership, according to Adam, is to help others become great leaders themselves through inspiration – not instruction. During that process, presence and patience are essential.
Adam says that “perfection is a myth” and rather than expecting perfection from those you lead, uphold accountability by witnessing trials and errors without judgment. A leader must strike a delicate balance while leaving room for mistakes – or learning opportunities – while avoiding micromanaging.
The cornerstone quality for effective leadership, according to Adam, is passion. And for most, passion is best expressed through constant communication with those you lead, as well as your customer. Adam believes that face-to-face conversations, based on genuine interest and typically unrelated to business, with both employees and customers, sets a precedent for compassion.
Tune in to this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast to hear more insight from Adam on the qualities that define a successful leader.
