Trust: It’s the backbone of success in life and business.
“[The consumer] wants trust, safety, and inclusion in the companies they do business with,” says RE/MAX Holdings CEO Adam Contos.
On this week’s episode of the Start With a Win podcast, Adam and Producer Mark unpack the three categories of building trust and provide tips for listeners to strengthen relationships and better lead others.
Category 1: Relationships
“Trust, for the most part, is built by building relationships,” Adam says. “You have to build positive relationships.”
Rather than using the “relationships are a two-way street” analogy, Adam prefers to think of relationships like a web. When forming genuine friendships with trustworthy people, one hopes that a trustworthy friend has their own network of trustworthy friends. The more people who form a relationship out of trust, the more the web of trust grows.
Category 2: Judgment and Expertise
“When people trust a brand, a leader, [or] a human being, they’re trusting that you’re make decisions that are mutually in the best interest of the situation,” Adam explains.
He shares that good judgment is a requirement when making decisions that affect other people. Good judgment, in turn, creates trust. He also believes that good judgment most often stems from expertise based on plenty of practice.
“Expertise is the culmination of your perspective, your opinions, [and] your ideas based upon past experience.”
Category 3: Consistency
Consistency is another critical component in building trust with others. Adam says that by honoring a commitment to promises and deadlines, others learn what to expect from a person.
The best way to be consistent, according to Adam, is to be willing to go above and beyond for people, perpetually delivering more than they expect.
Tune in to this week’s podcast episode to learn more about these three categories – and practical ways to implement them into daily life, business practices, and leadership.
