RE/MAX Region Breaking Barriers High in the Sky

The iconic RE/MAX hot air balloon is more than a symbol – over 110 real-life RE/MAX balloons fly through the sky above dozens of countries. In fact, the RE/MAX hot air balloon fleet is the world’s largest.

Those balloons are flown by skilled pilots who are experts in the unique, basket-clad aircraft. And one of them has made history in South Africa – as the country’s first Black commercial hot air balloon pilot.

The RE/MAX of Southern Africa region’s charitable initiative, The RE/MAX Foundation, contributed funds to support Komane Harold Tjiana in earning his commercial balloon pilot license.

“The RE/MAX Foundation exists to promote and inspire Southern African people to improve themselves and strive to be the best they can be. One of the brand’s mottos is that we don’t just work in a community – we live there too. That’s why we’re committed to uplifting the people who live there with us,” says Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa.

“It’s our collective responsibility to give back and leave this world a little better than we found it. If we all contribute however we can, we can make a noticeable difference in our countries. RE/MAX of Southern Africa is proud to play a small role in this historic moment. Harold’s story is an inspiration to others.”

Tjiana previously held a free balloon pilot license, which meant he could fly privately. After completing at least 100 hours of solo flying time, Tjiana has officially earned his Class 1 commercial balloon pilot license, making him South Africa’s first Black commercial balloon pilot.

On September 2, Tjiana celebrated the impressive accomplishment with a flight.

“As someone who grew up in a small village, this truly feels like the impossible became possible,” Tjiana says.

“I’m very grateful to everyone who contributed to this – though it is not the end, just the beginning of a new chapter. My career and future certainly look bright.”

This feat has been a long time coming. Tjiana recalls being introduced to hot air balloons over 20 years ago by a friend – and he’s been enchanted by them ever since. Now, as a commercial balloon pilot, he’s taking his dreams even higher.
