Settling into a new home can feel both exciting and overwhelming at the same time. The first few months are filled with all things new – starting new routines, discovering new ways to decorate and introducing new traditions. With the holidays right around the corner, my partner and I – who recently moved to a new state and will not be traveling back to our hometown – have been looking for ways to make our new place feel like home.
If you’re like us and have recently moved or will be moving soon, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:
1. Put up familiar decorations (and don’t be afraid to do it sooner rather than later!)
Every Thanksgiving, my family has pilgrim-shaped salt and pepper shakers on the dinner table. Since we couldn’t all be together this year, my family members and I each purchased the same salt and pepper shakers to add a bit of familiarity to our holiday meal. I’ve also started putting up some of our holiday lights and decorations, which has brought a sense of excitement and familiarity to our new living quarters.
2. Decorate your space with any holiday cards you receive
Nothing makes me happier than receiving holiday cards from family and friends! Collect the cards and hang them on a wall to enjoy the cute family photos and season’s greetings. They are a nice reminder of how lucky we are to have special people in our lives.
3. Buy holiday candles or scented items that will bring back fun and happy memories
The smell of pine always takes me back to my childhood, when we would decorate a fresh tree in our living room. While my partner and I won’t be purchasing a live tree this year, we will certainly have a pine-scented candle (or three) in our living room.
4. Create holiday traditions to enjoy in your new home
Whether it’s a holiday cookie recipe you’ve always wanted to try or the matching family pajamas you’ve been wanting to wear, don’t be afraid to create new annual traditions. There’s no better way to make a place feel like home than by creating new ways to celebrate the holidays.
