RE/MAX Holdings, Inc. has received reports of fraudulent checks – sometimes for large dollar amounts – being sent to consumers and businesses. These checks appear to be issued by RE/MAX Holdings, Inc. or “RE/MAX” and may look legitimate (for example, they may include valid routing numbers, watermarks, and other security features) but they are being sent to recipients as part of a scam. These fraudulent operations are not associated with the RE/MAX network or authorized by RE/MAX Holdings, Inc.
While fake check scams vary, those involving unauthorized use of the RE/MAX brand may start by an unexpected, large check arriving in the mail from an unknown sender and/or address. It is anticipated that after the fraudulent check is received and cashed by a recipient, the scammers will contact the recipient and ask that the funds be wired or sent back to them or to another person. The scammers may concoct a story for why they mistakenly sent the check to the recipient in the first place or why they need the recipient to send the funds elsewhere.
If you have any questions about the legitimacy of a check purportedly issued by RE/MAX or RE/MAX Holdings, Inc., please contact CustomerRelations@remax.com with your concerns. You may also want to report the incident to the bank identified on the suspicious check.
Additional resources regarding these types of scams are available from the Federal Trade Commission and the American Bankers Association.
