While the latest REMAX National Housing Report identified the national average home price to be $450,000, the reality remains: Real estate is all about location. Nearly half of the metro areas surveyed in the report fall near or above that price point, but there are still places where average home prices are lower. In fact, six U.S. markets featured in the report have median home prices under $300,000 – offering opportunities for first-time buyers, investors, and those looking to relocate without breaking the bank.
Here’s a look at six of the most affordable metro areas:

Spotlight: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
“The Western Pennsylvania real estate market in July 2025 continues to demonstrate steady appreciation, increasing inventory and an improving median price point of $260,000 – tied for the most affordable housing market in the nation,” said Ben Hess, Broker/Owner of REMAX Real Estate Solutions with three locations throughout Pittsburgh.
“With its mix of top-tier universities, thriving tech and healthcare sectors, and rich cultural amenities, Pittsburgh offers a compelling blend of affordability and quality of life. Whether you’re a first-time buyer, a growing family or an investor, the region’s housing market presents a unique opportunity.”
Why Affordability Still Matters
In a time when interest rates and inflation continue to shape buyer behavior, affordability remains a key driver in housing decisions. These six cities stand out not just for their price points, but for the value they offer — from job opportunities and lifestyle perks to long-term investment potential.
