Ashley Twichell learned to swim before she learned to walk. What started as a safety protocol by her parents launched into a lifelong passion and full-time career. She has since competed in multiple World Championship events, appeared in Sports Illustrated magazine and, most recently, qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games for open water swimming. With the Olympics now postponed to 2021, Twichell remains hopeful and humble through this sharp turn of events.

On this week’s episode of Start With a Win, Twichell joins RE/MAX CEO Adam Contos to share the lessons she’s learned in her pursuit of becoming one of the top athletes in the world.

Unlike the calm of a lap pool, Twichell competes in open water swimming, facing unpredictable conditions like tides and currents that can quickly change with the weather. Despite an ever-changing climate, Twichell is not discouraged by uncertainty, accepting that the nature of the sport is to expect the unexpected. This concept parallels the mindset that makes her a world champion swimmer and soon-to-be Olympic athlete.

“For me, what’s been helpful is just really trying to focus only on what I can control and not worry about what I can’t.”

Twichell speaks about her reaction to learning that her dream of being an Olympic swimmer is being delayed by a year due to travel restrictions and public health concerns surrounding COVID-19. In the face of discouragement, she takes control of what she can and accepts what she cannot. Twichell says she is staying focused by sticking to a routine, maintaining a healthy sleep schedule and taking everything day by day.

Listen to this week’s episode to learn how a professional athlete keeps her head up when the path to success gets bumpy.
